How to Calculate a Degree Grade in Italy
The degree grade is calculated in two phases: first the weighted average of exams is determined, then it is converted to the /110 scale by adding the thesis score and any bonuses.
Weighted average formula
Average = Sum(Grade_i x CFU_i) / Total CFU
Example: Analysis I 28 x 9 CFU = 252
Physics I 27 x 6 CFU = 162
Chemistry 30 x 6 CFU = 180
---------------------------
Total: 594 / 21 CFU = 28.29
Conversion to /110 degree grade
Grade_base = (Average / 30) x 110
Example: (27.50 / 30) x 110 = 100.83
+ Thesis bonus +4 = 104.83, rounded to 105/110
| Weighted avg | Base /110 | With +4 bonus | With +7 bonus | Band |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30.00 | 110 | 110 + lode | 110 + lode | Excellent |
| 29.00 | 106 | 110 | 110 + lode | Excellent |
| 28.50 | 104 | 108 | 110 | Very Good |
| 28.00 | 102 | 106 | 109 | Very Good |
| 27.00 | 99 | 103 | 106 | Good |
| 26.00 | 95 | 99 | 102 | Good |
| 25.00 | 91 | 95 | 98 | Fair |
Bonus Points and Degree Types
| Bonus type | Typical points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Thesis | 0-6 points | Commission evaluation |
| Supervisor | 0-2 points | Professor opinion |
| Honours in exams | 0-2 points | Bonus for number of laudes |
| On-time graduation | +1 point | Within regular timeframe |
| Erasmus experience | +1 point | At many universities |
| Degree type | Duration | Total CFU | Max thesis bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor (Triennale) | 3 years | 180 CFU | 6-8 points |
| Master (Magistrale) | 2 years | 120 CFU | 8-10 points |
| Single-cycle 5yr | 5 years | 300 CFU | 8-10 points |
| Single-cycle 6yr (medicine) | 6 years | 360 CFU | 8-11 points |
110 e lode (with honours) is only awarded if the grade reaches 110 AND the commission votes unanimously. It is not automatic even with a score of 110.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the weighted average calculated? ▼
Multiply each grade by the exam CFU credits, sum all products, divide by total CFU: Average = Sum(grade x CFU) / Total CFU. Exams with more credits carry more weight than in a simple average.
How do you convert the average to a /110 degree grade? ▼
Use the formula: Grade_base = (Average / 30) x 110. Example: 27.00 / 30 x 110 = 99. Add the thesis bonus (0-8 points) and round to the nearest integer.
How much does the thesis count? ▼
0-6 points for bachelor degrees, 0-10 for masters. The supervisor adds 0-2 more points. Each university sets its own rules.
What is the minimum average to graduate with 110? ▼
With max thesis bonus of 8 points: you need a base grade of at least 102/110, i.e. an average of about 27.82/30. With zero bonus you need exactly 30/30.
Does getting honours (lode) on exams raise the average? ▼
Honours counts as 30 numerically. Many universities add a separate bonus for the number of laudes earned (typically +0.5 or +1 per set threshold).
What happens if the calculated grade exceeds 110? ▼
The degree grade is capped at 110. If the commission votes unanimously, 110 e lode is awarded.
Is the university average only used for graduation? ▼
No — it is also used for scholarships, doctoral admissions, some public competitions and master degree applications.
